It may no longer be news that Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, produces the bulk of literatures from the continent. It may also not be news that Nigerian writers both at home and in the diaspora have won some of the most significant prizes in the continent and beyond: Nigerian writers Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Ben Okri and Buchi Emecheta are household names across the globe. However, in more recent years Nigerians have been fast ignoring, even abandoning books - that same item that has earned the nation so much fame.

Recent research has it that;
the reading culture is not an integral part of the average Nigerian, especially among teens and youths.
Nigerians do not place a high value on Reading.
the reading culture is not being imbibed by the young ones at an early age.
Nigerians do not love reading books.

Some of the reasons for the poor reading culture in Nigeria are;
Poverty: The economic crunch has hindered parents from buying the recommended text books for their children, and other books on a wide range of subjects capable of broadening their knowledge scope.
Extinction of Public Libraries: With the Government's attention focused on other areas, the outdated books in our public libraries were not replaced with current editions, poor maintenance made them uncomfortable for reading and before long it became a shadow of itself.
Parental Indifference: In a bid to strengthen their financial power, both parents in most families work and often times return home late and cannot make out time to ensure that their children are reading on a wider level. Ironically, these parents themselves lack the reading habit due to time constraint.
Strong contenders: Over time, various spheres such as sports (especially football), music, movies have made most people consider reading to be a boring exercise, and lack the will, drive, patience, discipline, to sit at a spot and read.

Although a few people in some quarters have sounded the clarion call to revive the reading culture, many Nigerians are yet to obey the call. A Nigerian Novelist Chimamanda Adichie says, “People come up to me and say, 'I am so proud of you and your success, but I don't read', with no shame whatsoever. We are raising young people who don't think that reading is important. It really bothers me that most people don't read. They say if you want to hide something from a black man, put it in a book. Apparently, Nigerians spend less time poring over books, indulging rather, in other mediums, thanks to the advent of cable television, video games, the internet and advance in technology. The bookworms are a select group who are fighting an uphill battle to make reading cool again”.
The zeal to read books has been consumed by the fire of mediocrity, ignorance, indifference, and low financial empowerment. The Reading culture can be revived "overtime" if certain machineries are put in place… That is what GARDEN CITY LIBRARY stands for.
